Classes

Six kinds of class, one mat

Every class has a coach on the mat and a size limit, and you can move between them as you like.

  • Hands gripping a jiu-jitsu jacket collar in a guard position, close view
    Gi, ages 16 and up

    Fundamentals

The class for anyone new. One technique, drilled slowly with a partner, and live practice only when you are ready. Up to 20 students.

  • A row of adults in white uniforms bowing to their instructor at the start of class
    Gi, ages 16 and up

    All levels

New and experienced students on one mat. Your coach pairs you by size and experience, and you drill at your own speed. Up to 20 students.

  • Two students grappling on a mat, seen from a distance with their faces turned away
    Fitted shirt and shorts

    No-Gi

The same positions without the jacket, so the grips change and the pace is quicker. Fundamentals first for new students. Up to 20 students.

  • A group of women holding firm stances in a bright studio while their coach leads
    Women, ages 16 and up

    Women's classes

Fundamentals, all levels and No-Gi in a room of women only, plus a Saturday open mat. Many students start here and move to the open classes later. Up to 14 students.

  • An empty jiu-jitsu academy with wall-to-wall mats and tall windows
    All levels

    Open mat

Unstructured time to drill and roll with whoever is there, with a coach on the mat. Bring a partner or find one.

  • Children wriggling across a mat in a jiu-jitsu drill while their coach watches
    Ages 7 to 12

    Saturday kids' class

Games, partner drills and a bow in and out, on its own hour and its own mat, with parents on the bench. Up to 12 children.

Every class

The same shape, every time

Every class follows one pattern, so you always know what comes next and can tell your coach where you want to slow down.

  • A bow in and a warm-up

  • One technique, shown slowly

  • Drilling it with a partner

  • Short rounds of live practice, if you want them

  • A bow out and a wipe of the mat
